Old Orchard Beach, Maine is known world wide as a tourist destination because of our beach, the widely photographed historical Pier and a seaside amusement park.
What a lot of visitors don’t realize is that “OOB”, as it is affectionately known, is also a tight knit, year round community of families, merchants and businesspeople.
In recent years there have been several changes made in OOB. Memorial Park has finally become a “green space”, a spot where families gather to watch free concerts in the summer and ice skate in the winter. This year we will host a visit from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall and are in the midst of finalizing plans for the next phase of the park. If you still remember Memorial Park as a blacktopped area with a little bit of grass, you will be amazed at the transformation.
Our children are fortunate to be able to grow up with the Atlantic Ocean as their neighborhood swimming hole, our 7 mile beach as their playground, and The Pier and Palace Playland Amusement Park basically in their backyard. But, they are also fortunate to attend what has been recognized as a "National School of Excellence". It is one of the schools described in the book, Ten Schools That Work by Maryann Horenstein.
Our downtown district has been seeing renovations by business owners that are contributing to the changeover of Old Orchard Beach to a year round destination for tourists and residents alike. No longer do we need to travel out of town for off season shopping. Most of our purchases can be made right here, along with added dining and entertainment options.
So, whether you are here for a day, a weekend, a week or longer – we hope you notice the changes going on. Old Orchard Beach will always be a vacation spot for everyone to enjoy – but may its citizens never take for granted the fact that we get to be on vacation all year long.
